Tent Stove Tips and Tricks

Hi everyone I’ve been testing tent stove five weeks now and seeing how it works and i have decided to share you a little tips and tricks video then straight in to choosing the right material to burn in the stove hardwood is the best solution to burn in the stove specially at night time hardwood is so thick and its higher heat content is the best option for the task and it burns much longer than spruce Spruce has the feature as everyone knows it pops ember all around so its a bit safety issue aswell at night when adding wood in to stove it could pop ember outside of the stove and then if you have some material around the stove it might set it on fire hardwood, for example birch is the best wood to burn in the stove and also if you dont use so called.. spark arrestor in your chimney spruce really doesn’t work in your tent stove in my first test run i managed to burn dozen of holes on my tent canvas so i have some patching to be done also burning spruce in your stove i noticed it could even pop some ember out of the air intake when really pushing the limits of the stove and when you dont have any burn cover in front of the stove there is a possibility for an accident So its a good idea to add something in front of the stove something that doesnt burn. Now that i had my tent in a regular spot for longer period of time i used few bricks which were really handy when maintain the ember bricks help a lot if some embers would pop out of the stove, they would land straight on to the bricks Starting a fire is recommended to start with smaller wood make some tinder and use them to start the fire and afterwards you can add bigger wood That way the fire will start nicely Here at southern Finland the winter doesnt seem to be starting right now its about +10degrees looks like winter wont be coming this year at all nevertheless even if we have warm weather and you want to sleep in the tent and do some small trips tent stove is awesome for tenting at night the temperature might get a lot colder than the day time Good option for tent stove is to get a stove fan on top of the stove stove fan distributes the heat all around the edges of the tent canvas and if you dont have a inner tent which would insulate between inner and outer canvas an air pocket therefor would keep the tent much warmer so such stove fan distributes the heat and if need be you can even use a … space blanket to radiate the heat back to a person who sleeps on the mattress and so it brings extra comfort to sleep and what comes to watching over the fire during the night i quickly noticed that its a good idea to make some tinder nearby for the night if the fire goes out and the temperature in the tent gets colder you can easily start new fire at night so, always new fresh set of tinder and some small wood nearby and i also did… at first my tent stove was facing towards the door which had the best air intake for the stove but the constant need to fuel the fire and getting up from the sleeping bag getting up from the sleeping bag always felt bad and when adding wood in the night time i wouldnt always notice how the wood goes in to the stove and what was the current sitsuation with the embers or the overall condition of the stove my solution was i just turned the stove door to face me so it would be easy to see through the glass what is the sitsuation in the stove and add wood in to the stove and at the same time seeing the overall condition of the stove i would say the stove fan has a great feature stove fan reacts to heat and if the fan isnt spinning fast enough you can easily assess the need for more wood fast Moving the stove to face the sleeper who maintain the fire it really helps the person who is in charge of the stove so its not that hard to keep good warmth inside of the tent at night time so there is no need to be awake to keep on eye of the fire you will (atleast i did) wake up fast when feeling coldness and then you can quickly add more wood in to the stove and lay your head back to the pillow. you can even get a good night of sleep even if you are alone no need to share the job with anyone Then there are stove accessories we already covered the stove fan one of the nicest accessories for the stove is a watertank you can place it on top of the stove at cold nights you can get warm tea or juice pretty fast with warm drink you can keep your body warm it is really nice it brings more value for tenting. I highly recommend. Thermometer. Its a nice addition for tenting with the stove it kind of gives insight of the temperature from outside of the tent and from the inside aswell. and as a beginner as i a thermometer inside the hottent gives some idea how much wood is needed to acquire for the night and how much you actually need to burn. doesnt take much space from the bag. I recommend to get one. Maintenance and safety i could talk a lot about it but… I kind of fooled around with the stove and tried to take it to its limits. and i noticed that its a good idea to sweep the chimney after every day or every night so basically its a good idea to sweep it before the breakfast if the stove has extinguished specially when using 45 degree angles angles gather a lot of carbon dust and so called spark arrestors are magnets to it and even if you make a mistake and put something that doesnt belong inside of the stove i really dont recommend to put anything extra inside of the stove other that wood basically cardboard, paper etc blocks the spark arrestor holes really fast. i did a small experiment i put a small piece of bacon inside of the stove i wanted to see how it burns and what would happen it released so much grease and mixed with the carbon after few hours i noticed how it blocked the spark arrestor and the chimney parts which ment that… i had to put the fire out… and clean the whole chimney grease mixed with the carbon is so tough that i probably need to use some oven cleaning chemicals to get it cleansed Not recommended to put anything else than wood in to stove Then naturally fire fighting equipment its a good idea to have atleast for your sanity perhaps not a good idea to haul a powder extinguisher in to wilderness with you unless its possible but simple bucket of water does the trick its a fast way to extinguish the fire and then carbon monoxite detector it is pretty good option for safety its nice to have it around if you been lazy with the stove maintenance and you havent cleaned the chimney every day it can have the effect to blowback the smoke during the night when you are sleeping even from all the stove holes and the chimney air intake controller you either wake up for the smoke or you dont. so basic smoke alarm or a carbon dioxide detector works So… Maintenance for the stove and chimney everyday and dont burn anything extra in the stove Then some extra convenience in the tent at night when keeping the fire and if its pitch black i liked to use a small flaslight that burns through the whole night when you open your eyes there is relatively bright light to allow you to see what you are doing with the stove and you wont burn yourself there is always a risk to burn yourself when you are drowsy unless you are using gloves you could burn your flesh Space blankets Its a really nice invention Savotta has one nice model it suits in many use not bad idea at all to bring it along with you it gives you extra warmth And then the sleeping height from the ground if you can isolate your bed from the ground a bit higher lets say about 10 cm higher and your mattress it will give you much better warmth from the stove and comfty so… Its best to with all available option try to raise your sleeping area a bit higher from the ground and naturally its good to have a good supply of fresh air in the tent so the stove will burn purely and well air inside from the ground and then of course the smoke etc raises upwards This kind of small ideas and obsevations i have made from using the tent stove if you have an idea to share please write it down to a comment section lets share the ideas and thoughts if i likely forgot to mention something of course this is a pretty wide subject could have a long talk about it. but this is what i have covered for now a small video of tent stove while waiting for the winter to arrive it will most likely turn to spring if you liked the video, please click on the thumbs up button and the subscription button.
