Rebuilding Homes in the Himalayas

Rebuilding Homes in the Himalayas

[MUSIC PLAYING] Langtang was quite
near the epicenter of the initial
earthquake, and it’s up near the Tibetan border. Langtang is located right at
the northern border of Nepal. So right behind these mountains
that you see over here is Tibet. It’s located at
over 11,000 feet. Wonderful people, very kind,
loving, generous hearts. As you can see far
out over there, that’s the remains of Langtang. It’s just, it’s just the top of
what’s left of the avalanche. An avalanche came
thundering down that slope, 1,000-foot face, and just
buried the entire village, killing approximately
300 people on that day. [DRUMMING] At the time of the avalanche
that came thundering down over here, there
was a wind force that was created, which experts
say was equal to about half of that of an atomic bomb. You can see the trees
on the opposite mountain face over there. They were all just flattened. They were just
completely wiped out by the sheer force that was
created by the avalanche. The avalanche didn’t
even reach that side. And in addition to
that, anybody who was not in the direct
impact zone of the avalanche was blown away by 50
to 100 feet because of that force that was created. And a lot of people lost
their lives that way as well. [MUSIC PLAYING] Obviously, unfortunately
Langtang village as it used to be
no longer exists, and so an entirely new
community has had to be built. Samaritan’s Purse is
committed to building many more of these
kind of houses to provide new homes
for people of Langtang. We have focused our
efforts on building model homes, use what we’re calling
build back better techniques. If there’s a future earthquake,
that the house stands and it doesn’t crumble
or it doesn’t fall. It’s been about two years now. Slowly, people are coming
back and rebuilding, and Langtang’s
coming back to life.
