First Impressions: MSR Carbon Reflex 2 Ultralight Tent

Hi guys! I’m Greg Thomas with Outside
magazine. Today we’re talking about backpacking tents and, specifically, the
MSR Carbon Reflex 2, which is one of our featured tents in our Summer 2016 Buyer’s Guide. This is a 2-person, 3-season tent, and the
reason that we’re talking about it is because of how light it is and how well
it packs down, which are two things that you want to consider when you’re going
backpacking. This tent comes with the rain fly and a footprint, and it weighs in
with all of those things at just over two pounds, and then it also packs down so
that it’s about 17 inches long and five inches wide, which is awesome—it’ll save
you a bunch of space in your pack. So the way that MSR was able to go even
lighter with this one is it’s got carbon fiber tent poles and then it’s also got
this super light nylon micro-mesh. Also, on the vestibules,
there’s no zippers on the outside. They replaced it with velcro, which is a
lot lighter. So this has quickly become my go-to tent
this summer, again, just because it’s so lightweight and it packs down so well, and those are the two things that I look forward to when I’m going to hit the trail.
